Cricket pitch left out of Denton Park concept plans By Emily O’Connell THE HORNBY Cricket Club is “very upset” after new plans for Denton Park’s $35.7 million mega centre don’t include a cricket pitch. The club received an email from the city council which included the visual concept of the proposed development. President Kevin Hornbrook said the club isn’t happy with the visual concept and it doesn’t want to move the pitch from the park. However, city council head of recreation and sport John Filsell said they are not the final plans. “Many of the current uses of Denton Park are omitted as they are not required to illustrate either the area of the park,” he said. The Hornby Rugby Football Club’s lease runs until 2039 and the Hornby Cricket Club’s lease ends in 2053. The visual concept did allow for the cricket clubrooms but Mr Hornbrook said it’s no good without somewhere to play. Hornby Ward city councillor Jimmy Chen believes it’s “unfair” to say the cricket club is losing their pitch. •Turn to page 4

Board leaders sneak back in By Emily O’Connell MIKE MORA and Helen Broughton have survived being overthrown in their roles as chairman and deputy chairwoman of the HalswellHornby-Riccarton Community Board. But they keep their positions because they also cast a vote – for themselves. Four members voted to oust the pair at last week’s board meeting – Riccarton Ward city councillor Vicki Buck, Halswell Ward city councillor Anne Galloway and board members Natalie Bryden and Catherine Chu. But chairman Mora and deputy chairwoman Broughton with supporters Hornby Ward city councillor Jimmy Chen and board members Ross McFarlane and Debbie Mora ensured they scraped back in with a 5-4 majority. The board decided to review the positions a year ago – a decision that Mrs Broughton is calling “very unusual.” Ms Bryden said she voted against the current chairs because sometimes change can be good. She said a few people may have been interested in becoming

Mrs Broughton thought the voting “was slightly unacceptable.” She thought there would be more votes to keep the status quo. Mr Mora said anything controversial can cause tension and it’s especially difficult when you don’t get all the information “in a timely fashion.” Mr Mora and Mrs Broughton will remain in their roles until the next local body elections in October 2019.

The board also decided to hold its meetings at a different location next year. Future meetings will be held at the Fendalton Library and Service Centre on Jeffreys Rd. Mrs Broughton said though the centre is out of the ward, she believes the library will provide a better space: “The public can sit and see and hear all the board members,” she said. Mrs Broughton made a resolution to note any concerns from constituents. “It’s not set in stone, but I think it’s worth doing for at least six months.”

BUS SHELTERS GO AHEAD The Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board approved the installation of eight new bus shelters at its meeting last week. The locations are Corsair Drive, 59 Waimairi Rd, 58 Patterson Tce, 78 Springs Rd, Caulfield Ave, Awatea Rd, 13 Springs Rd and 51 Main South Rd. DOUBLE-DECKER STOP The Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board also approved a new bus stop on Rotherham St, outside Westfield Riccarton. Hassle Free Tours will use the stop for its doubledecker bus tours. The bus intends to stop outside the mall every 30min in summer and every hour over the rest of the year. SCHOOL RAISES $30K The Westburn School Community Association has raised nearly $30,000 from multiple fundraisers held throughout the year. The money will go towards landscaping and decking. A motion was passed at the school’s board meeting to contribute to the project. It means the school can finalise the contractor and get the project up and running by early next year.

Mr Filsell said the cricket club has “expressed interest” in moving to Warren Park. But Mr Hornbrook said they don’t want to move but if it’s their only option, then they will have to go with it. He said the city council has put aside $1.6 million for the relocation but he’s not sure it
would cover the cost of moving all the different clubs. Hornby Rugby Football Club chairwoman Lyn Hucklebridge said the visual concepts mean they will lose one rugby field. She said it will put “a lot of pressure” on the fields, especially for training. Mrs Hucklebridge’s main concerns regard traffic access and car parking. “I’m disappointed in the whole process of it being positioned where it is, it should never have been on Denton Park,” she said. Cr Chen said it’s impossible to make everyone happy but he
“opened his mind to everyone.” “I look forward to these facilities being built as quickly as possible,” he said. Save Denton Park group member Brian Brodie sent an email last week to the city council’s chief executive Karleen Edwards, city council staff and members of the Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board outlining the group’s concerns and legal warnings. Public consultation on the reclassification process will start on January 20 and will continue until March 24.

After another short period of private ownership, the building and land was eventually purchased by the Sisters of Mercy, who wanted to educate young women, often forgotten by educational institutions in those days. The sisters named the property Villa Maria meaning “house of
Mary” and developed a boarding and day school for the girls of Canterbury. Villa Maria was considered out in the country – some distance from the rest of Christchurch, and many pupils boarded. Villa was staffed for many years by nuns, and had a sister principal up until 1992, when the first “lay” principal was appointed. The blessing will be on display as part of a comprehensive history exhibition during the school’s centennial celebrations. •School’s time capsule, p13

Memorial photo for Japanese school By Emily O’Connell A JAPANESE school which had 11 students die in the CTV Building collapse has been gifted a photo of the earthquake memorial at Avonhead Park Cemetery. The Friends of Avonhead Cemetery Trust gifted the photo along with a pikorua to represent the bond the group have with the Toyama International Language School. The school is 300km north-west of Tokyo. FOAC’s founder trustee Karl Varley presented the gift to the school’s principal Kuniaki Kawahata last Friday. “Many of the families have never visited the memorial so to have this photo framed with a pikorua inside was extremely poignant to them,” FOAC chairman Clive Paris said. Mr Paris said the school was amazed by the gesture and it means a lot to parents who aren’t able to visit the memorial in person. “Mr Kawahata expressed how deeply touched they were that FOAC was remembering their loved ones even to this day,” he said. Mr Paris said the group will continue pushing for the

New Briscoes to be built at Bush Inn HOMEWARE giant Briscoes will move into the Bush Inn Centre in 2019. A 3000 sq m building will be constructed at the front of the centre on Riccarton Rd to provide a new high-profile Briscoes. The retail company said easy parking and access for customers, a high-profile site and proven successful location are the reasons behind the move.
Resource consent has been issued and Briscoes hopes to open in March 2019. According to Ganson Group, which runs the Bush Inn Centre, it’s proving popular with retailers and shoppers. Said Ganson Group development manager Andy Bell: “The few remaining sites in the Bush Inn development are being taken up quickly and any retailer wanting to join us now should get in touch fast.”

THE Brethren of Lodge Takahe No. 397, The Freemasons Charity and City Harvest are joining forces to help the hungry at Christmas. Together they are providing a Christmas meal to the homes of 50 families across the city. Organiser Joshua Jackson said the idea is to provide families with quality food items to cook a Christmas meal in their own homes.
Some of the food was collected from South City New World last week, with other items from the City Harvest food bank. A team packed and distributed half of the dinners to the chosen families’ homes. This week they will collate the remaining packs for delivery. The packages included a frozen chicken, stuffing, gravy, Christmas pudding, Lindt chocolates and fudge.

Mr Jackson said the initiative is slightly different because they are giving families luxury items for a Christmas dinner instead of “just a normal food parcel”. He hopes the Christmas dinners will relieve stress and spread Christmas joy. “It’s my belief that this drive will serve as a pilot to test the feasibility of potentially running a much larger scale project in subsequent years,” Mr Jackson said.

By Emily O’Connell THE CITY council is reassuring a concerned Avonhead resident that spraying in local parks is safe. Linda Blackmore has laid a complaint with the city council about how often they spray weed killer in Avonhead Park, Crosbie Park and nearby streets. She said they are “continually spraying,” even on windy days. City council neighbourhood and sports parks operations manager Al Hardy said the gardens are sprayed on a monthly basis “to control existing weed vegetation species only.” Mrs Blackmore also has concerns about what the city council is using to kill weeds. But Mr Hardy said the city council use a plant-based organic herbicide. “The organic herbicide is nontoxic to humans and animals. A stronger sense of community Westside Community Trust Connections Programme co-ordinator Julie Young talks about what they do in the community Sockburn and Upper Riccarton residents have loved the community fun days at Sockburn Park hosted by Westside Community Trust for neighbourhood weekend in March and neighbourhood week in October. The trust, which is linked to Westside ACTS Church, is soon to be renamed Activate. We aim to help residents develop a stronger sense of community, belonging and wellbeing, and to identify the local community organisations they can be part of. The fun days were free so everyone could participate. Hundreds of ice creams, sausages, pottles of popcorn and cups of fizzy were consumed and kids loved the three-legged races, sack races, egg and spoon races, bouncy castle and games. Local schools, pre-schools and dance schools were invited to provide the entertainment. The trust is very grateful for all the

sponsorship it receives. Many organisations had stands to advertise the services they offer in the community. The next fun day will be on Sunday, March 25. Columnist bids farewell By Mark Thomas – fire risk management officer THIS IS the last flame files. After nearly 11 years back in Christchurch and 518 columns completed, I’ve decided it’s time to shuffle off into retirement. The column has been something I’ve always enjoyed. Sometimes the time available has been too short for comfort and some other times I’ve had a good subject and time to do it justice. I can only hope it’s been entertaining to some and even occasionally informative. I know the issues haven’t really changed. There are still too many kitchen fires. There are still too many arson fires. But in recent years, the number of fire fatalities has fallen. This must in part be the result of our promotion of smoke alarms and I still live in hope of the day none of us will agree to sleep anywhere that is not alarm covered. Another quite satisfying part of this job has been the public speaking. I’ve talked to older people, young people, service groups and even prisoners in jail.

Tech-savvy teacher awarded By Julia Evans WINNING an unsung hero award from EducationHQ New Zealand is no easy feat. Selwyn House teacher Simon Christie had to develop an entirely new curriculum, the first of its kind in New Zealand, to take out the unsung hero technology category last Tuesday. The Burnside resident codeveloped the mechatronics course with his colleague, Liz Fairhall. It mixes technology, robotics, mechanical engineering, mathematics, science and the arts. “We’ve always had a robotics programme but we wanted to find a point of difference,” he said. That’s when the mechatronics course began its development. “Girls are often underrepresented in the science and technology fields. We want them not only to be taking part in them, but leading the way,” he said. Winning the award was “vindication” that his pupils would have an advantage in a world dominated by technology. While he has put many days and nights into the curriculum, the course will never quite be

complete. “That’s what we tell our girls. In mechanical engineering, nothing’s ever quite finished. It’s a never-ending task. You can always find something to change and upgrade. It’s the same with mechatronics,” he said. Mr Christie said while the
mechatronics curriculum began in one Selwyn classroom, it is now taught throughout the school. “From years 1-8. And they’ve even started teaching it in the pre-school,” he said. One of his proudest moments was when his year 7 pupils
developed a knife that could be used by his mother-in-law who has tetraplegia. “The girls were learning about rights in society in terms of people with a disability. They then applied their mechatronics learning to help solve a problem,” he said.

The 1.3ha property has been operating as a Boys’ Brigade Camp for many years and includes a main lodge with kitchen, living and bathroom facilities, alongside sleeping facilities for 24 people. The property will replace Kokiri Lodge in 2019 as the school’s outdoor education facility. The school’s board of trustees were conscious of the increasing issues of owning property and operating a programme at a location so far from the school. They felt moving their Kokiri programme to this side of the Southern Alps would be a prudent thing to do. The board is confident that “Kokiri” at Birch Hill will be able to provide a similar experience and enduring memories for the school community for many years to come.

Drama group to premiere romantic Aussie musical
By Emily O’Connell THE HALSWELL Drama Group will be the first in the country to premiere an Australian musical written by the brother of a Wiggle. It will be taking the stage with Who Loves Me? in August. The musical is written by Australian singer and songwriter John Field. Halswell Drama Group vice-president Tim Gunther said they’re “really excited” to perform the musical. He said Mr Field’s brother, Anthony Field, co-founded The Wiggles. Mr Field helped his brother write some of the music for the popular children’s show. Mr Gunther said the Field family are well known in Australia as successful musicians, writers and actors. Who Loves Me? follows the story of Enzo Bellini, proprietor of Bellini’s Cafe, whose one last wish is to see his heartbroken daughter Sophia Bellini happy again. Sophia finds herself on a giant billboard across from the cafe put up by her father, proclaiming her “the jewel of the city” and inviting interested suitors to call into Bellini’s Cafe. Not long after, a second new billboard appears with a mysterious inscription – but who was responsible for it? Mr Gunther said they’re planning on doing six shows,

By Emily O’Connell A COMMUNITY trust is looking at what it can do to revamp Sockburn Park so it can be a hub for locals. Westside Community Trust went to the Halswell-HornbyRiccarton Community Board with suggestions for the park in September. The trust requested toilets. and a clean-up for the paddling pool and barbecue area. The park’s pool was closed 11 years ago through the city council’s 2006 Aquatics Facilities Plan and the 2006-16 Long Term Council Community Plan. The city council presented a report to the community board last week which indicated nothing can be done in the near future. “Staff have included such a bid to be added to the draft capital porgramme to be prioritised alongside other potential
projects for the 2019-29 Long Term Plan,” the report said. The report also said the funding for the park would be in two stages. “Twenty thousand dollars for planning in 2026 and $200,000 for implementation in 2027. This funding is subject to city council approval,” the report said. The trust’s programme co-ordinator Julie Young said they had hoped it could have been done sooner but is glad their suggestions are being considered. “We will work with the ctiy council and other interested organisations who would like to see the park become a strong community hub,” she said. Mrs Young said the next step is for them to see what can be done in the short term. “I think it has lots of scope and we’re trying to help the community to connect more,” she said.

Children give back to the elderly at Xmas By Emily O’Connell TWO AVONHEAD schools are sending their love to the elderly this Christmas. Avonhead School and Avonhead Kindercare Learning Centre are working together to spread the word about the Sending Love initiative. Hannah Rodgers, of Auckalnd, and her five-year-old son started the initiative after finding many elderly people were alone at Christmas and didn’t receive cards from family or friends. Avonhead School’s Family and Whanau of Avonhead chairwoman Briar Newham said Sending Love is very important. “It’s going to mean the world to some people, just to get a wee card,” she said. Said Avonhead Kindercare Learning Centre early childhood teacher Felicity Goy: “I love the thought of bringing some Christmas cheer to someone who may be lonely at Christmas and I wanted to role model this to the children at pre-school and my own daughter,” she said. Avonhead School year 3 and 4 pupils are using class time to help create cards. Ms Newham is hoping the school can gather at least 100.

School sends capsule into future ON THE eve of Villa Maria College’s 100th birthday, students have been working on a very forward-thinking project – a time capsule to be opened in 2068. Teacher Mikaela Hood has been working with her students to decide what items should be included in the capsule. “Two year 12 history classes were studying historical sources and as part of their learning look into different time capsules around the world and consider what and how historians Mikaela could use these Hood sources,” Ms Hood said. She said the idea of the college creating a time capsule evolved from this. Year 9 social studies classes have been involved in collecting the items to be included. Year 9E photographed the school, collected artefacts and asked principal Deborah Brosnahan to write a letter to the school’s future principal. PINEAPPLE, GINGER AND COCONUT CRUMBLE Ingredients Filling 1 pineapple 2 Tbsp butter 1 tsp vanilla essence 2 pieces star anise 4 pieces crystallised ginger, finely chopped 3/4 cup coconut milk Coconut crumble
100g butter 160g flour ½ tsp ground ginger 50g sugar 80g shredded coconut 1 lime, zested Directions Heat oven to 180 deg C. Peel pineapple, cut into quarters, remove core then slice into small even pieces. Melt butter in a large frying pan, add pineapple, vanilla and star anise.
Cook on a high heat until pineapple begins to caramelise. Add ginger and coconut milk, allow to simmer gently for 10min. Dice butter then rub in flour and ginger using fingertips until it resembles breadcrumbs. Stir through sugar, coconut and lime zest. Spoon pineapple into a baking dish, sprinkle over coconut crumble mix and bake for 20-30min until crumble topping is golden and fragrant.

2 cups of grated carrots (from about three carrots) 1 cup of grated fresh beets (from about one medium sized peeled beet) 1/2 cup golden raisins 1/2 teaspoon paprika (sweet, not hot) 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon Small pinch of salt Small pinch of cayenne 2 Tbsp lemon juice 2 teaspoons honey 2 Tbsp sliced fresh mint leaves
Directions Place the grated carrots in a medium sized serving bowl. Place the grated beets into a sieve and briefly rinse with cold water. This will rinse away a little of the excess beet juice that may otherwise colour the whole salad beet red. Pat dry with a paper towel. Then add to the bowl with the carrots. Add the raisins. Stir to gently combine. In a small bowl, whisk together the paprika, cumin, cinnamon, salt, and cayenne. Then add the lemon juice and honey and whisk until smooth. Drizzle over the carrots and beets, then gently fold until the carrots and beets are lightly coated. Let sit for an hour before serving, either chilled or at room temperature, for the dressing to seep into the carrots and beets. Right before serving, stir in a couple tablespoons of sliced fresh mint leaves. Garnish with fresh mint.

Be aware of how much you are actually drinking
hristmas is a time for celebration, spending time with friends and family and enjoying festive foods and drinks. Nutrition-wise, this festive fare can be a challenge. Here are some simple tips to help you survive the festivities: • Don’t try to lose weight over the festive season. With parties, families and all the special foods that go with Christmas, it’s going to be just about impossible! Your main aim should be to maintain your weight (using some of the tips below!) • Eat regular meals. If you skip meals you are more likely to fill up on high fat snacks. It only takes a few of these snacks to add up to more calories than your usual meal. • Avoid going to a function hungry, you can easily eat a lot of party food in a short
time. Have a small snack beforehand like a bowl of cereal, yoghurt or a sandwich are quick and will help fill you up. It will also help if you are well hydrated, so try drinking a few glasses of water before you arrive. • Deep fried foods, crumbed and battered foods, cheese platter and nuts are all high in fat. Choose fruit, vegetable or bread based snacks. • If you are hosting the party, offer your guests a range of healthy snacks. Always popular are hummus or salsa dips with vegetable sticks. • If you are taking a plate, make yours a healthy option. How about a platter of fruit currently in season? • Listen to your body and stop eating when you feel full. • Just say ‘No” to food – mentally
practice strategies to decline food offers. For example: “It looks amazing but I am full” or “I tried it and it was great”. • Chat and mingle. If you are bored at a party you’re more likely to hover around the food table or seek out the serving platter. A good conversation can distract you from the food. Avoid standing right beside the food table or bar while you’re talking. • Consider your drinks, they can add to the calorie count very quickly. Try diluting your alcoholic drinks, such as a spritzer (½ wine, ½ soda). If you prefer spirits, try a diet mixer. Lite beers are lower in calories and alcohol. Remember soft drinks, juices, punches, tonic water and flavoured mineral water can all have similar calories to alcoholic drinks. •Be aware of how much you are actually

drinking. Alternate alcoholic drinks with glasses of water and non-alcoholic choices. • Keep active. Join in the Christmas backyard cricket game or go for a walk with friends or relatives. Remember you’re aiming for 30 minutes of physical activity each day. • If your regular exercise class stops over the Christmas break, plan other types of exercise - organise your friends and put a date in your diary. If you do really overdo the festive foods or drinks, take a deep breath and start the next day afresh with healthy foods and some exercise. No fasting - just sensible eating. Remember, a few parties don’t make you overweight, it’s what you do all the other days of the year which count.
